A single fillet weld on the flange's outside completes the pipe connection. However, before welding, a gap must be made between the flange or fitting and the pipe. Two fillet welds are used to attach the flange to the pipe, one on the outside and one on the inside.
The faces of slip-on pipe flanges are usually raised or flat. When a raised face is required for slip-on pipe flanges, 1/16" is the typical height "under 400# for slip-on pipe flanges The normal slip on pipe flange raised face height is 1/4 inch for 400# and higher slip on pipe flanges "
